The Orioles have never given out a deal over three years to a free agent pitcher. Ever. In fact the longest deal I can recall any pitcher getting was Scott Erickson's five year extension. There was no reason to believe they were going to go this route, whether it made sense or not.

O I know this just shows this team doesn't really wanna win.

Tell me again why the Orioles couldn't do a deal like this?

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Brewers are giving $52M to a pitcher who has won 15 games in last two years, and hasn't pitched over 155 innings since 2011.</p>— Andrew Rickli (@AndrewRickli) <a href="https://twitter.com/AndrewRickli/statuses/426420692830404609">January 23, 2014</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> That's actually a pretty decent reply.

Well I was certainly wrong about the contract that Garza would get. At that price, the O's should have been all over him.

Though, at the same time, it sets a lower than expected market for the remaining starters. The O's should be able to sign one of Jimenez, Santana, Arroyo, or Burnett at a fair price.

4/$52. $13 million a year. For a damn good pitcher with no draft pick penalties.

Over last 4 years:

2010: 1.6 WAR

2011: 4.9 WAR

2012: 1.1 WAR

2013: 2.2 WAR

Granted, there were health concerns...but that's not a terrible contract. And of course the O's weren't in on him. Just disgraceful, really.

I'm disgusted that I re-upped my season tickets.

It's a great contract. Pitchers salaries are already inflated, so this looks positively cheap for the player they are getting.

This offseason has been one giant turd.

For real what has Dan done the last 2 off-season? Answer is nothing.

OK let's get this out of the way now.....

1. He isn't that good! Glad he signed with the Brewers, he is "their problem" now.

2. Who knows if he wanted to come here? It takes two to tango, I heard he said in an interview he always wanted to play for the....Brewers.....growing up.

3. Too much money, thank God we didn't sign him. Clearly he will only be worth X war over the next 4 years, and he got a deal paying him way more than that.

4. Garza is not worth 13m a year, just shows the "market inefficiency that DD will refuse to be a part of.

5. With only "close to" 100 marbles, it would have been a bad signing.

6. We need that money to sign our own, Garza wasn't a good idea no big deal.

7. The way to build a team is not through free agency, we have to develop our own. Garza would just be taking starts away from one of our young "studs".

Did I cover them all?

I'm SOOOO relieved he's not an Oriole even though he signed for a little less than I thought he'd get. I've been against signing him from the start.

Much like LaRoche, I have a feeling I will be one of the "I can't believe so many people wanted to sign this guy" posters when he's struggling a year and half from now.

Yep... good post. My thoughts exactly.
